Botox
Botulinum toxin has been around in the field of cosmetic medicine since 1987. The first published manuscript appeared in1992. Since then literally millions of people have sought out this toxin that relaxes muscle to soften the ageing look of hyperdynamic lines.
The use of Botox® continues to expand in all fields of medicine. Apart from its use in and around the face to soften and temporarily reduce or eliminate the lines associated with frowning or ageing, it is being used in cases of cervical dystonia, strabismus, blepharospasm and severe primary hyperhidrosis. It is also used in certain types of cervical headaches. Recently published studies also indicate its potential pain relieving qualities in severe osteoarthritis of the knee.
How does it work?
The Botox® toxin acts at the neuromuscular junction, that is where the nerve and the muscle meet. It stops the release of the chemically active acetycholine, thus causing a temporary paralysis of that muscle.
